In order to become a citizen you have to file a petition to get U.S. citizenship through the process of naturalization if you are an immigrant who moved to the United States. Or you file for Citizenship through birth if you were born to parents who were U.S. citizens at the time of your birth.

It usually takes 8–12 months until your citizenship application is processed and you get citizenship. However it can take longer depending on the district you live in and few other factors. When you want to become a citizen through naturalization you have to file a petition using form N-400. This form is also called naturalization. You can fill this form online or apply by mail. You then pay the fees and you are in line to get your citizenship.

You will then have a biometrics appointment. And after that you will be scheduled for an in person appointment.

At this appointment you have to show that you have been a person of good moral character. You will be tested to make sure that you have the basic understanding of U.S. constitution and U.S. history. You will also be tested for your verbal and writing English skills.

Once you pass the test, you will be scheduled for an oath taking ceremony where you will be granted a certificate of naturalization and now you are a U.S. citizen.
